I think the place to start is with a brief exploration into the meaning of the term. First, the word that I have forever stumbled over: media. I bet I hear the word six times a day and it’s always used like it’s a thing. “The media” — what does that mean? I think people want it to just mean television or print but it means more, right?
To me, media is everything. In undergrad, I had a work-study job in the student craft center. There, we had an instructor who taught a class called “Mixed Media.” What did that mean? Well, they created art with anything and everything — you should have seen the heaps of stuff they put together!
I just looked the word up on Dictionary.com. Of course it led me to the singular “medium” and among the definitions was this one,
An intervening agency, means, or instrument by which something is conveyed or accomplished.
If something is emerging, that means it’s not fully realized yet. If I’ve been working in my office all day and I emerge into the conference room, people can see me but they’re still waiting to hear what I have to say. Emerging media is the same way. It’s something that’s just right around the corner. I’ll contrast it with new media, of which I still think social media, smartphones and streaming video are all elements. As I write this, the Apple Watch is a good example. It’s been announced but not yet released. We know it’s coming but we have no idea how it’s going to be realized in the market.
I’m looking forward to filling this blog with my insights and see what emerges!
